Micah and Dakota also had back to school night last week, the afternoon before school started. I put them in the same class this year with our favorite teacher Ms. Howard, who is also my good friend's mom and the clown we had at the girls' birthday party SEVEN years ago. Times flies.
Two fifth graders- can you believe it?
Micah was a nervous wreck before school. She told me about her "friend" from last year who wrote her notes all school year that included things like, "I don't like you and don't want to be your friend," and "I hope you leave," and other nasty crap. I wish I would have known last year...
Girls are mean sometimes and Micah is sometimes easier to step on because she is so loving and so forgiving. Those are some pretty incredible strengths to have and we're working on getting a bit stronger on our own two feet.
Still, and rightly so, she was nervous because this friend from last year is in her class this year. We had a long talk before class about the type of friend she might want to look for. While still looking at her classroom, we turned around and found Alexis and her mom Charisma. They live in our neighborhood and I've known Charisma for years because she's a child welfare adoption attorney. We hadn't seen Alexis in awhile with COVID and homeschool last year, but there they were! Alexis is in a different class but wanted to find Micah, which was such a blessing. I was telling them about how nervous Micah was and that she was a little anxious about starting, and Alexis said: "Micah, I know about anxiety. I learned how to make hats with a loom when I get anxious, and I can show you!"
By that night, through texting parents, they had made a plan of where to meet for lunch and recess.
I wanted to share this whole story for one big reason:
I want Micah (well, anyone) to know that God knows what we need and He delivers. And nearly always, it's delivered through the love and care from others. Sometimes we are those people for others and sometimes they are those people for us.
Also- I don't want to forget Dakota in back to school night! She was mega excited, and a little disappointed to know her group of friends were in a different class. She was pretty sure it'd be no problem to find them at lunch or recess and was a happy camper looking at her desk and everything around the room.
Yay for fifth grade!
